Couples Therapy

Of all that we value in life, relationships are usually the most important. So when a significant relationship goes awry, the distress can affect many areas of your life. You may feel you have lost your bearings, or you may want to move forward to experience what you have always dreamed of with your partner. Communication problems, the inability to resolve conflicts, being stuck in the same repetitive destructive pattern or a betrayal can motivate a couple to seek couples therapy.
Couples therapy is a collaborative process. In choosing a therapist, each partner needs to feel that the therapist understands your unique concerns and experiences and you feel safe enough in the therapist's office to take risks. I have found that taking a very active role, giving clear and immediate feedback and teaching necessary skills is a crucial part of of working effectively with couples. Sometimes, a significant part of my work is explaining your position in a way your partner can understand. When this occurs old negative patterns that have kept the relationship stuck may shift and new possibilities may emerge.
Whatever the presenting problem may be, my experience can help you quickly pinpoint your core concerns. Once identified, a specific plan can be developed to help you accomplish your goals. Sessions build on each other so you can assess your progress and we can address obstacles that thwart not having the relationship you desire. Couples therapy may accomplish your goals in a relatively short time, or it may be a longer process if you decide to work on difficult entrenched issues. Our work together is designed specifically to help create the relationship you desire.

Individual Therapy
Most times it is the symptoms of depression, anxiety, reaction to a recent crisis or symptoms related to past trauma that brings a client to individual therapy. Some seek therapy when they feel disillusioned with a part of their life, or have ongoing feelings of unrest and want to experience more contentment or happiness in life.
Within a supportive therapeutic relationship and in a safe environment, a significant shift in your experience of yourself and your life's circumstances can be realized. You may be able to work through obstacles that have impaired relationships and impeded experiencing a greater sense of well being. Through the therapeutic relationship you may find the inner resources to make the changes that may not have seemed possible.
I find the work of an individual therapist is a challenge to emphatically enter another's experience and an honor and privilege to do just that.
